The wider picture
The ABS National Study of Mental Health and Wellbeing (2020-22) found that among people aged 16 to 85, 21.4% in Victoria (21.5% Australia-wide) had a mental disorder in the previous 12 months. Anxiety disorders affected 17.4% in Victoria (17.2% nationally) and affective disorders such as depression 7.6% (7.5% nationally). These are state and national figures; the study does not report them for individual suburbs. ABS source.
What these numbers do and don't mean
- Census figures describe the suburb, not our clients. They tell you nothing about who attends our practice.
- The Census figure is self-reported: it counts people who chose to list a mental health condition as a long-term health condition. It is not a diagnosis count, and it is not the same measure as the survey's 12-month disorder prevalence, so the two should not be compared directly.
- Small differences between suburbs are not meaningful. Age mix, willingness to report and access to health services all influence what people record.

How we can help people in Spotswood
Spotswood is a small suburb: about 2,800 people, a median age of 37, and 49.2% of families are couples with children. With a population this size, Census percentages can move a lot from one count to the next, so treat them as a rough outline rather than a precise measure.
The clinic is about 14.6 km away, roughly 16 minutes by car. Some people find it easiest to do therapy from home or a private space at work by telehealth, and keep in-person visits for when they suit. Both are available for adults; adolescents aged 12 and over are seen by telehealth.
With 32.2% of homes rented, many households change over time, and moving, new jobs and shifting family arrangements are common reasons people seek a psychologist. Brett Mackie works with anxiety, depression, trauma and stress-related concerns, and Natalie Bryson (provisional psychologist, supervised) sees adolescents on Fridays. Availability changes, so please check with reception.
Results vary between people, and we cannot guarantee any particular outcome. Your psychologist will talk through the options with you before starting.
