The wider picture
The ABS National Study of Mental Health and Wellbeing (2020-22) found that among people aged 16 to 85, 21.4% in Victoria (21.5% Australia-wide) had a mental disorder in the previous 12 months. Anxiety disorders affected 17.4% in Victoria (17.2% nationally) and affective disorders such as depression 7.6% (7.5% nationally). These are state and national figures; the study does not report them for individual suburbs. ABS source.
What these numbers do and don't mean
- Census figures describe the suburb, not our clients. They tell you nothing about who attends our practice.
- The Census figure is self-reported: it counts people who chose to list a mental health condition as a long-term health condition. It is not a diagnosis count, and it is not the same measure as the survey's 12-month disorder prevalence, so the two should not be compared directly.
- Small differences between suburbs are not meaningful. Age mix, willingness to report and access to health services all influence what people record.

How we can help people in Seddon
Seddon has about 5,100 residents, a median age of 36, and a high share of rented homes at 39.1%. Around 44.1% of families are couples with children. With this much renting, household arrangements can change fairly often, and moves, new jobs and shifting relationships are common reasons people look for a psychologist, though each person's situation is their own.
Seddon is about 15.3 km from our Altona Meadows rooms, roughly 17 minutes by car in usual traffic. For a lot of people that is manageable for an occasional visit but awkward for weekly sessions, so telehealth suits many. You can log in from home, and adolescents aged 12 and over are welcome to do the same.
The 2021 Census shows 11.3% of Seddon residents reporting a long-term mental health condition, which is above the national 8.8%. That describes reporting across the suburb and does not mean anyone needs therapy. If you are thinking about seeing someone, Brett Mackie works with anxiety, depression and trauma (including EMDR), subject to availability, and Natalie Bryson sees adolescents on Fridays.
Results vary between people, and we cannot guarantee any particular outcome. Your psychologist will talk through the options with you before starting.
