    The wider picture

The ABS National Study of Mental Health and Wellbeing (2020-22) found that among people aged 16 to 85, 21.4% in Victoria (21.5% Australia-wide) had a mental disorder in the previous 12 months. Anxiety disorders affected 17.4% in Victoria (17.2% nationally) and affective disorders such as depression 7.6% (7.5% nationally). These are state and national figures; the study does not report them for individual suburbs. ABS source.

What these numbers do and don't mean

    • Census figures describe the suburb, not our clients. They tell you nothing about who attends our practice.
    • The Census figure is self-reported: it counts people who chose to list a mental health condition as a long-term health condition. It is not a diagnosis count, and it is not the same measure as the survey's 12-month disorder prevalence, so the two should not be compared directly.
    • Small differences between suburbs are not meaningful. Age mix, willingness to report and access to health services all influence what people record.

How we can help people in Laverton

Laverton is one of our closest neighbours, about 3.2 km from the clinic and roughly six minutes by car. The 2021 Census shows a younger suburb, with a median age of 32, and one where 48.6% of homes are rented and 58.8% of residents were born overseas. Moving to a new country or a new home can bring pressures that are not always visible from the outside, and some people find it helpful to talk them through.

If cultural background, migration or family expectations are part of what you want to discuss, you are welcome to raise them in a first session. Adults can attend in person at Altona Meadows with free on-site parking, and adults and adolescents aged 12 and over can use telehealth.

Brett Mackie works with anxiety, depression, trauma and stress, and Medicare rebates apply with a GP Mental Health Treatment Plan. We are not a registered NDIS provider, although self-managed and plan-managed participants are welcome.

Results vary between people, and we cannot guarantee any particular outcome. Your psychologist will talk through the options with you before starting.
